What is house sitting?

Updated October 18, 20262 min read

House sitting means that you stay overnight at a pet parent's home to look after their pet while they are away. If the pet is a dog, it usually includes dog walks.

How a request works

  1. A pet parent sends you a request. The request shows the check-in and check-out dates. House sitting is priced per night.
  2. A chat opens with the pet parent, where you can talk through the details.
  3. You can accept the request (you write a short message to the pet parent), suggest a different price with Provide custom price, or close it.
  4. After you accept, the pet parent can book and pay in the app. The booking is confirmed once the payment goes through.

While the request is still open and not booked, you or the pet parent can change it with Modify request.

What sitters usually do

Sitters follow the pet's usual schedule, as instructed by the pet parent. Pets have their routines and, unlike people, can't easily adapt to a different situation. That is why it is important to clear everything up before you accept a request.

Check the pet's details

Open the booking request to see the pet's details: the breed, size and age, and any instructions the pet parent has filled in. Read them carefully before you decide.

Before you accept a request

Please only accept a request when you have all the details, you are sure you can follow the pet's routine and you are comfortable with the pet parent's requirements. Use the chat to ask about anything that isn't in the pet's profile, for example:

  • if the pet is a dog, the number and times of the walks
  • how much time you are expected to spend with the pet during the day
  • feeding, medication and any other routine the pet follows
  • that you are comfortable staying in the pet parent's home

If you change your mind

  • Accepted, but not booked yet: you can still close the request without any penalty.
  • Booked and paid: if you cancel, the pet parent receives a refund minus an administrative fee, so they will not get the full amount back. It can also affect your reliability score. Please cancel only in exceptional circumstances, when nothing else can be done.
